What is your role within the Academic Collaborative Centre related to people with PIMD?
The theme of my doctoral research is constipation among people with PIMD. The first phase entails a literature study, which I am conducting alongside my work as a lecturer in Nursing at Hanze University of Applied Sciences. I am a PhD student affiliated to the Research Group on Healthy Ageing, Allied Health Care and Nursing.
What do you hope to achieve?
I want to see healthcare professionals equipped to detect and diagnose constipation sooner and more accurately and then to provide the most appropriate treatment for the individual concerned. At present, it is extremely difficult for healthcare professionals to make an accurate diagnosis. People with PIMD are not able to clearly communicate what they are feeling. Chronic constipation causes multiple symptoms. It can lead to serious medical problems or even death.
