After a while; a study into the sustainable implementation of Programma Perspectief within the support of people with PIMD
On this page:

Introduction
Programma Perspectief is a proven evidence based intervention for persons with profound intellectual an multiple disabilities. We know what the active elements of the intervention are, but we see deviations from the way it works in practice. How is programma perspectief used in practice? And why is the intervention not used as intended? We study this in the ZonMw funded research project 'After a while; a study into the sustainable implementation of Programma Perspectief within the support of people with PIMD’
Workpackages
The research consists of 4 workpackages:
1. Asking support professionals how they work with Programma Perspectief and what goes well or does not go well.
2. developing strategies to help support professionals to use Programma Perspectief as intended together with support professionals.
3. Re-introduce and evaluate whether this leads to good results.
4. Sharing knowledge with practice.
These 4 sub-studies are described in more detail below. In the research we speak of work packages:
ad 1) The aim of work package 1 is a scan of current practice of how PP is implemented and why this deviates from the described evidence-based working method (knowing-doing gap).
ad 2) The aim of the second work package is, together with the important stakeholders, to develop adapted implementation (strategies) based on the results of work package 1. This is done using a Delphi method in which (experience) experts are questioned in several rounds.
ad 3) The goal of work package 3 is the (re)implementation of PP within the practice and analysis of the process of implementation and the (first) effects. This is done by means of a multiple case study. Developed knowledge will be shared with the practice throughout the project.
ad 4) The developments and results will be shared with the practice through the website and newsletter of the Academic Workshop EMB, the website www.programmaperspectief.nl and through trainings from the EMB expertise center of 's Heeren Loo.
For practice
In this research project we are investigating the sustainable implementation of Programma Perspectief: If we know where and how the described method is deviated from, we can better help care organizations with the sustainable implementation of this proven effective methodology for supporting people with (S)EVMB.
Thanks to the grant from ZonMw we were able to take up this issue, we are very happy with that. The research will run from the spring of 2023 until the end of 2025.

About the researchers
What is your role within the Academic Collaborative Centre related to people with PIMD?
I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, and for my research, I am affiliated with the ACC PIMD. My research focuses on developing and implementing interventions. In addition to this, I also teach in the Department of Special Needs Education.
What do you hope to achieve?
Fortunately, science is no longer something that exists entirely separate from ‘the real world,’ I hope to bring science and practice closer together. By working with experts by experience and healthcare professionals the chances increase that research results will be relevant and applicable.

What is your role within the Academic Collaborative Centre related to people with PIMD?
I represent the University of Groningen in the Management Team of the ACC-PIMD. I am a full professor in Special Needs Education at the University of Groningen. My goal is to develop a better understanding of how best to support children and adults with severe or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and their families. To this end, we are conducting various research projects focusing on the people with disabilities themselves, their families and the professionals who support them, as well as the relationship between these three groups. My role is to supervise these research endeavours and to prepare applications for new projects. I also lecture our own Special Needs Education students on a regular basis, as well as giving other lectures in this country and abroad.
What do you hope to achieve?
I want us to arrive at a place where we recognise children and adults with PIMD as a group that has the same rights to quality of life as everyone else – a life in which they can reach their full potential and can determine for themselves what their priorities are, to the greatest extent possible. That means conducting quality research, founded on equality-based collaboration with practice partners.
