Use of technology
Status: On going

Technology is a big part of our life. It can make life easier and more relaxed. For example, you can wind down by watching a series or you can be more independent by using a voice controlled smart speaker. People with PIMD could also benefit from the use of technology, however, they may need support when using these technologies. Therefor, they depend on the knowledge, experience, and attitudes of others.
Projects
During my PhD project, we perform multiple studies. Firstly, we created an overview of the types of technologies used by people with PIMD and their impact on quality of life. Secondly, we gained insight into how effort expectancy, attitudes, and behavioural intention of support people regarding the use of technologies are related. We also explored if these constructs are connected to support person’s characteristics and the support need levels of people with intellectual disabilities. Thirdly, we created an overview of the constructs related to the implementation process; how these constructs might facilitate or hinder the process and if these constructs can be changed. In the fourth and last project, we want to improve the implementation process by changing one of the constructs and analyse what happens.
Benefits to practice
The overall aim of the project is to improve the sustainable use of technology in people with PIMD. We want to do this by creating an overview of the types of technologies and their benefits on quality of life and by looking at the implementation process and how we can improve this process.

What is your role within the Academic Collaborative Centre related to people with PIMD
I’m currently a PhD student focusing on the use of technology in people with PIMD. First of all, the project examines the specific types of technology that are being used in people with PIMD and the benefits on their quality of life. Secondly, we want to get a better understanding of the implementation process. Therefore, we study factors related to the implementation of technology in people with PIMD.
What do you hope to achieve?
The main goal is to improve the implementation of technology in people with PIMD and contribute to sustainable use of these technologies. With this, I would like to make life a little bit brighter for people with PIMD and their families. I hope to ease the burden on families, so that they can spend less time making the necessary care arrangements and more time enjoying their day. To achieve this goal, we need to combine our scientific knowledge with the knowledge and experience of the families and healthcare professionals in our target group. Together we can normalise the use of technology in people with PIMD and make sure that they can benefit from technology as well.
